Aloha Mai Kakou,
Chris here reporting from the ahupua’a of Waikiki. A region made famous for wave riding by Paoa Kahanamoku “Duke”, and the many others following. However, I would like to acknowledge a smaller, yet arguably more powerful side of the island, Mākaha. This weekend, water people of O’ahu gathered at Mākaha for the 48th Annual Buffalo Big Board Classic. In an “industry” driven surf culture, Mākaha events are hope that even in the face of competition, surfing will remain a celebration of Hawai’i. It is named after Uncle Buffalo Keaulana who’s legacy in water safety is incomparable. As the morning began with oli komo protocol, canoes, uncles, aunties, braddahz, sistahz and competitors lining the beach to welcome the day. These are our modern makahiki games!
Here is a photo of our east side canoe surfing team Makalapua, shot by Kuhio Vellalos.
Week one consisted of open big board, canoe surfing, alai’a, bodysurfing, paipo, supsquatch and more. What makes it most memorable however is hanging with da lahui and cooking on da beach. Ke’ili and I are looking forward to surfing in the tandem division next week! Enjoy this photo of her parents ruling back in their day . . . maybe we'll be that hammah one day.
That’s all for weekends. Our weeks have been jammed busy with work, and dreaming of summer travels on ‘A‘ā. Looking forward to showing you what has been in the works, but for now its top secret! A hui hou kakou!!!
