Kane @ Work
Ethnomads
aloha e, Keili here!
Chris has been hard at work. He is right next to me and covered in blue paint that I dont think will ever come off - oh no. hahahah. so proud of all the work he has been doing on our waʻa :3 oh no, he just told me its glue. marine glue.
Big update-
we basically got an eviction notice that our tent needs to be out of sight by the end of the month… guess the HOA doesnt like a big ol easy up in their nice zones, understandable. Grateful that we are given a month, but it is a chunk of time shorter than we initially thought!
Mahalo to Kylie, Hoʻokele, and all our friends for coming out and helping. It will definitely be all hands on deck (literally) for the next few weeks - come come!
Although I am working full time as an environmental scientist, I am trying to be there and putting in the hours when can over the weekends :)

Chris was excited to get to working on gutting, filling, sanding and glassing the rudders. Today, he began (and almost pau already) the process of replacing the old rusty and crusty hardware.
Life updates: Chris and I survived a weekend trip to Okinawa! Mahalo mahalo mahalo to Cinema at Sea for hosting us, it was such an immersive and truly special experience that I will never forget. Was so cool to see the ʻAʻĀ film with Japanese subtitles, and recieved so well in Chrisʻs ancestral homeland. It was both our first time, but Chris is 50% Okinawa blood, so it was quite special for him. And I am so lucky to have gotten to come along and discover a new, yet familiar land!
It is lovely to share our story, especially in a place that is looking toward the traditional ways of voyaging and living, similar to Hawaiʻi! I hope that some of the individuals who watched shared our spark of inspiration to simply go for it and figure it out with whatever (know-how, budget, or equipment) they get!
I would love to do a whole little Substack article on Okinawa and drawing parallels with Hawaiʻi…. again and again I recognized similarities between the two. Many of them were tragic, but mostly I felt excited and inspired to see more of one of the most beautiful lands I have ever been able to visit.
