Aloha kāua, chris here.
This morning, as I pondered the state of the world, my mind heard words to one of my favorite mele Hawaiʻi . . .
⁃ Haʻalulu ke kumu honua, hakuʻikuʻi i ka ʻāina nei
⁃ The foundation trembled, echoing throughout the land.
I walked away from the nearest screen, and my minds eye beheld the sea again.
We are living in the age of information, where truth is like a setting star. something we can see and follow, while not knowing what it really is. Out in the sea, you are dependent on your equipment up to a fault. Everything man made is fated upon our decisions and the oceans conditions. How similar are we in our anxious pursuit of knowledge beyond our control?
Reflecting on moments…
exploring the great blue, I found myself praying more and finding comforting peace. Strange how most of the world looks to voyaging as unprofitable and insecure. But what is security? Settling on a passionless job to feel secure has led me to some dark mental loops.
The other week, Keʻili and had the privilege of restoring a thousand year old fishpond fed by an ahupuaʻa (socioeconomic division of land). In the later half of the ceremony we placed hands on every stone and breathed hā, to request blessing for the years to come. Regardless on spiritual beliefs, what is important about ceremonial acts, is the notion that everything we do is special and that everything we experience is a privilege. Similarly, the voyaging mind opens us up to this ceremonial living. It’s security in holiness.
What voyaging continues to teach me, is that when we positively react to changing events, we make way. On the contrast, as the anxious fumbles creep in, we are loosing our awe. We begin to look to our broken selves instead of the open sky. Let’s try to change this together.

I do believe there is a spirit above, and the more “foundation trembling” moments occur, the closer we are to it.
