Aloha Kāua, Chris here.
Yesterday ‘A‘ā went for one last sail with her cutter rig before her mast came down. Memories came flooding back of losing my mind while trying to get all those fittings in place in California. I am thankful all the hard work paid off and my rigging stayed strong through the pacific. Very excited to experiment with different sail configurations in this next chapter!
Also, we realized that we don’t necessarily need the tillers to steer, a steering paddle off the windward hull did the job in a light breeze. Interested in trying a bigger hoe in more weather helm situations.
The day before de-rigging, I got the opportunity to sail with our friend Levi on his gaff rigged Tiki 30. I was so inspired by the simplicity of his settup and how he was able to easily maneuver the reefs under sail. Standing rigging was attached to the mast without any metal, and the running rigging was controllable from anywhere on deck. Check out that open deck space made completely out of repurposed household wood!
Keʻili and I just came back from a pleasant trip visiting ‘ohana on Kauai where we scored beautiful waves and good cousin cruising time. The beauty of the garden isle never ceases to amaze us. Just a matter of time till we are able to sail ‘A‘ā over!
Aside from that, the days have been busy spent working on projects and getting ready for our next adventure. In our downtime we have been finding some videos for inspiration. Here are some that are worth a watch!
Hope everyone has a well enjoyed and productive week, ALOOOOOOHA
