Aloha Mai kākou, Keili here!
Hope everyone is having a lovely end to what seemed to be a long week! This week was filled with driving and coursework for me. But hey, now I’m HAZWOPER trained! So don’t mess wit meeeee.
Got to take ʻAʻā out for a long sunrise sail this morning with Chris and our friend Sally! We messed around inside with the light wind and then ended up Motoring out beyond the channel and dragging our hand line. Unfortunately, we didn’t catch anything. But we did see a ʻīlioholoikauaua (Hawaiian monk seal) playing with a humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa! Who knows what they were up to.

The new rigging is working gloriously. We noticed she does quite well in light winds and can even tack with grace (sometimes she needs a friendly kick off the side).
We have been dreaming quite frequently of longer sailing trips. With summer fast approaching, we know it’s about time for ʻaʻā to get some TLC. Mostly cosmetic, but there are some patches of exposed wood we need to make sure are taken care of. We also need to figure out a solution for high winds since we have no way to reef the new sails….. TBD…. Crab claw?
Grateful beyond expression for such a gentle beauty morning on the water with good company and good wind! Surfing down the wave crests, laying along the tip of the manu, I felt like I was flying across the waves. It was a much needed freedom from the hustle and bustle of responsibilities the world has pushed me into. I hope you guys get to fly sometime today ( even if it’s just in ya head).
Mahalo for reading, until next time - a hui hou! E ʻai mai!
Me ke aloha,
Keili
As always, this post is dedicated to everyone who made soaring over the sea possible for me, especially my mother Illa McEvilly. Mahalo nui, mahalo ke Akua.
